Palm Sunday

Jesus' Triumphal Entry

Jesus' Triumphal Entry

Palm Sunday

On Palm Sunday, Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey while people spread palm branches and cloaks on the ground, shouting "Hosanna!" and welcoming him as their King and Savior. This event is mentioned in the Bible, in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, which is the week leading up to Easter Sunday. During this week, Christians around the world remember Jesus' last days, his crucifixion, death, and resurrection.

Discussion questions:

  • Why do you think people were so excited to welcome Jesus to Jerusalem?
  • Why do you think Jesus rode on a donkey instead of a horse?
  • How do you think Jesus felt when people were shouting and cheering for him?
  • Why do you think Holy Week is an important time for Christians?
  • How do you think we can remember and honor Jesus' sacrifice during Holy Week?

Maundy Thursday

Maundy Thursday

The Last Supper

Maundy Thursday honors the Last Supper, when Jesus established the Lord’s Supper. Churches celebrate Maundy Thursday by taking Communion.  During the Last Supper, Jesus shared bread and wine with his disciples and gave them a new commandment to love one another as he had loved them.

Maundy Thursday is also a time when Christians remember Jesus washing the feet of his disciples, which was an act of humility and service.

Discussion questions:

  • Why do you think Jesus shared bread and wine with his disciples during the Last Supper?
  • What do you think it means to love one another as Jesus loved us?
  • Why do you think Jesus washed his disciples' feet?
  • How do you think we can follow Jesus' example of humility and service in our daily lives?
  • Why do you think Maundy Thursday is an important remembrance for Christians?

Join us on Thursday at 6:30 as we celebrate Maundy Thursday.

Good Friday

Good Friday is marked by somber reflections on the death of Christ. When we meditate on what Jesus did for us, we are reminded of Jesus’ suffering and how powerful our sin is. Jesus took on our sin and experienced the ultimate separation from God so that we will never have to experience that.

Jesus was arrested, put on trial, and sentenced to death by crucifixion, which was a common punishment at the time.

Jesus was then forced to carry his own cross to a place called Golgotha, where He was nailed to the cross and left to die. He died on the cross in the afternoon, and his body was taken down and placed in a tomb.

Good Friday is a solemn and reflective day for Christians as we remember the ultimate sacrifice that Jesus made for us.

Discussion questions:

  • Why do you think Jesus was arrested and sentenced to death?
  • How do you think Jesus felt when he was carrying the cross and being nailed to it?
  • Why do you think Jesus was willing to suffer and die for us?
  • How do you think we can show gratitude for Jesus' sacrifice on Good Friday?
  • Why do you think Good Friday is an important remembrance for Christians?

WARNING: This is a complex subject that requires conversation.  We have chosen a video that summarizes Holy Week.  I recommend you watch this as a family and pause and talk with your children.

Easter Sunday

Holy Week leads up to the celebration of Jesus’ triumph over death on Easter Sunday. The Resurrection gives us hope that one day we will also have eternal life with God!

On the third day after Jesus' crucifixion, His tomb was found empty, and He appeared to his disciples, proving that He had risen from the dead. This event is known as the Resurrection, and it is the cornerstone of the Christian faith.

Easter Sunday is a joyful day, as Christians celebrate the triumph of Jesus over death and the hope that His resurrection brings for eternal life.

Discussion questions:

  • Why do you think the resurrection is such an important event for Christians?
  • How do you think the disciples felt when they saw Jesus alive again?
  • What do you think the resurrection teaches us about the power of God?
  • How do you think we can share the joy of Easter Sunday with others?
  • Why do you think Easter Sunday is an important remembrance for Christians?
